What is now known as the Kitemark was first registered as a trademark in 1903 for tramway rails. This standardisation had reduced the number of rail sizes from 75 to just 5.
The first ever Kitemark scheme as we know it today was and the subsequent use of the Kitemark symbol by a manufacturers was awarded in 1926 to the General Electric Company for light fittings.
The newest Kitemark scheme to be launched was for internet screening software - the Child Safety Online Kitemark launched in April 2008. Some products have changed little since they first achieved Kitemark certification while others have seen the Kitemark adapt to new technology, new materials as well as new industries.
