BSI strictly controls the quality and integrity of the Kitemark through regular checking and auditing of Kitemark licence holders. This means that you can be reassured that when you see a Kitemark it is valid.

Because we check the production and processes or service delivery through mystery shopping, audits and product testing Kitemark license holders must continue to produce or deliver the same quality every time.

Very occasionally a Kitemark licence is withdrawn where one of these elements does not come up to scratch. Equally, because of the value that the Kitemark has in creating a distinctive product advantage there are occasionally companies who try to use the Kitemark symbol without having a valid licence. Where we find these instances we act quickly to take appropriate action through Trading Standards Offices and where necessary, legal action.

To discourage this practice we will be publishing the details of these companies that mis-use the Kitemark so that consumers and businesses alike can be sure not to put their business to these companies.

The mis-use of a Kitemark licence is very rare as the vast majority of those companies that gain Kitemark status value it, protect it and maintain their commitment to delivering quality. As such you can be sure that there will rarely be any "outlaws".
